Mac Laursen continues path to UFC in Unified 63 headliner

TORONTO — Mac Laursen is ready to go for gold.

In the Main Event of Unified 63 on Sept. 26 at the iconic REBEL Entertainment Complex in Toronto, he’ll challenge Bobby Poulter for the vacant Unified MMA Canadian Welterweight Championship, LIVE worldwide on UFC Fight Pass.

Laursen, 31, has been preparing for this opportunity for most of his life.

“I always wanted to get into fighting and, when I was in Grade 10, my construction teacher was a boxing coach. I did a little boxing, and that kind of set everything in motion,” the Calgary, AB product says.

Laursen had 10 amateur boxing matches before transitioning to MMA and kickboxing. He fought his way to a 10-2 record in kickboxing while focusing mostly on his striking, representing the nation as a part of Team Canada and winning an International Kickboxing Federation intercontinental title.

Laursen is 8-3 in his professional MMA career, including a spotless 3-0 record in the Unified MMA cage. Interestingly enough, all but one of the overpowering striker’s wins have come by tapout.

Laursen is locked in for the biggest fight of his life in Toronto.

“Bobby is going to be ready. He trains with a lot of dangerous guys, and I know he’s going to be taking his training really seriously. But I’m taking it seriously too. I’ve been training my (expletive) off every day. I’m ready for a war, and I’m going to have my hand raised,” Laursen says.

“I think he’s going to want to come in and strike with me, but I believe in my striking,” he adds. “I know what kind of a striker I am. I’m going to be like a sniper in there — controlling my range and picking him apart with my jab.

“I’m going to be a problem for him. He’s going to be desperately shooting for a takedown because I’m looking for that knockout.”

Laursen will take great pride in leaving Toronto with the belt.

“Winning that belt is the next step to the UFC,” he says.

“I’ve always fought the toughest guy available and this one is no exception. I’m proud to have never backed down from a challenge, and winning this belt will be a testament to that.”
