Ali Charkie: “I’m Built For War”

Oct 24, 2022

CALGARY – Ali Charkie is quickly establishing himself as one of Canada’s top young fighting prospects.

The reason, the Calgary athlete says, is simple.

“I’m built for war,” Charkie says on the eve of his fifth pro fight.

“I’ve always loved violence, ever since I was a kid. I’ve always loved watching superheroes and things like that, and mixed martial arts was the closest that I could get to that.”

Charkie, 27, only began training a few years ago, but he’s jumped out to a 3-1 start in his fighting career. He goes for his third straight victory against Seattle’s Fay Bursell (5-2) in super-welterweight action at Unified 47 on Dec. 2 in his hometown of Calgary, LIVE on UFC Fight Pass.

Charkie says he’d be in jail for fighting had he not found the sport of MMA, so it should be no surprise that he’s expecting to deliver a brutal beatdown at the Genesis Centre.

“My goal for this fight is to butcher this guy in one or two rounds and make a statement that I’m one of the top prospects in Canada,” Charkie says. “There’s going to be a lot of violence, and this guy is going to go back to the States busted up.”

Charkie isn’t looking past Bursell, but he plans on adding several more victories to his resume over the next 12 months.

“Unified is going to be putting on a lot of shows in 2023, and I’ve already made my intentions clear that, if I’m healthy, I want to be fighting on every card,” he says.

“I don’t do this stuff to be cool or make a bit of spending money. My goal is to get to the top. I’m not going to rush the journey, but I want to fight as much as I can for Unified and work my way to the top.”
