Kolton Menzak Eyes 8th 1st-Round Stoppage Over Nick Hrabec At Unified 40

EDMONTON — Kolton Menzak’s journey in MMA started on the ice.

“When my midget hockey days were winding down, everybody wanted to fight, so it seemed like a natural progression,” Menzak says with a laugh on the eve of his bout with Nick Hrabec (7-5) at Unified 40 on Aug. 14 at the sold-out River Cree Resort & Casino, LIVE on UFC FIGHT PASS.

Menzak has established himself as one of Western Canada’s top up-and-coming welterweights in the cage. But he says he wasn’t an enforcer during his days on the ice.

“I didn’t fight a lot, but I was a big hitter,” he says. “I was more of a smart player, I guess you could say.”

Menzak also played lacrosse and football growing up. He tried his hand at MMA after not being able to go as far as he would’ve liked in team sports. After a 5-1 amateur career, it looked like he was on the right path.

All of Menzak’s seven victories as a professional have come by stoppage in the first round. He hopes that trend continues against Hrabec.

“I think we’ll stand up and I’ll have a bit more power than him. I think I’ll catch him with a couple shots, get on top and throw some elbows in, and either take him out from mount or make him give me the choke,” he says.

“The goal is to be as exciting as I can be,” he adds. “Use my striking skills, throw in an elbow, and give the fans something to remember.”
