Pressure makes diamonds for Ramil Kamilov

CALGARY — All eyes are on Ramil Kamilov.

The Kazakhstan-born Canadian is undefeated with five stoppage victories in his first six fights and widely regarded as one of the top prospects in the world of MMA. He returns to action Friday against top Mexican prospect Roberto Pixley at Unified 52, LIVE on UFC Fight Pass from BMO Centre in Kamilov’s hometown of Calgary.

Kamilov is used to putting heavy pressure on his opponents. But as his stock grows in the fight game, he admits to feeling a bit of pressure on his own shoulders.

“It’s only going to get bigger and bigger from here, so it’s good for me to get in there and feel the pressure,” the 26-year-old Kamilov says.

“The tougher times you have, the more natural situations like a fight become,” he adds. “Fear is just an emotion, and I’m emotionless in the cage.”

Kamilov predicts his undefeated streak will be extended on Friday, and he’ll score a first-round KO over Pixley. It’s likely another big win could land him an invitation to compete for a UFC contract at Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series, or an outright contract to the UFC.

Kamilov is making great time in his career, but he’s in no rush.

“It’s hard to get into the UFC. There aren’t any handouts in the UFC, nor do I want a handout,” he says. “I just want to continue to win and earn my opportunity.”
